Namgyal Institute of TibetologyNamgyal Institute of Tibetology is a Tibet museum in Gangtok, Sikkim. It is the world"s largest treasury of invaluable old Tibetan books and manuscripts on science, medicine, astrology etc. It attracts Buddhist scholars from around the world. It is one of the most important and famous institutes in the world that does research in the areas of Tibetan language and culture. It also has in its premises a museum, a Tibetan library with rich collections and also a reference center about Tibet and Himalayas in general.



History of Namgyal Institute of Tibetology
The foundation stone of the museum was laid by the 14th Dalai Lama on February 10, 1957. On October 1, 1958, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, inaugurated the Sikkim Research Institute of Tibetology. Sir Tashi Namgyal, the 11th Chogyal of Sikkim, changed its name into the “Namgyal Research Institute of Tibetology”.

The centre also has a wide range of Lepcha and Sanskrit manuscripts and scrolls of ancient vintage. The museum attached to it contains over 200 icons, old thangkas and some ritual vessels amongst the various objects of art on display.
