Mosques of Kottayam District

Erumeli, Changancherry, Erattupetta and Thazhathangad of Kottayam District are famous for its mosques.

Erumeli Vavar MosqueErumeli:
At Erumeli there is a famous mosque in the name of Vavar who was a friend of Lord Ayyappa. The `Chandanakkudam` festival is celebrated here in January every year. This coincides with the `Makaravilakku` of Sabarimala. At night there is an attractive procession with dressed up elephants and `Panchavadyam`. This is an important festival of the local areas.

Changanacherry:
At Changanacherry there are two famous mosques Pazhayapalli and Puthurpalli. Between them the Pazhayapalli is said to be more than 1000 years old and it is constructed at the site. A king of Thekkumkur donated this. A Bhagavathi temple and Catholic church are situated in the surrounding area of this mosque. This shows the religious harmony of the people here. The Puthurpalli is about 400 years old. The followers of the different religions of the district celebrate the festival `Chandanakkudam`.

Thazhathangadi:
The mosque at Thazhathangadi is one of the ancient mosques in India. According to many persons Malik Dinar had built this mosque about 1000 years back. Now it is regarded as one of the important pilgrim centres at Kottayam. The artistic value of this mosque attracts tourists every year.

Erattupetta:
The mosque at Erattupetta is known as one of the famous mosques in the state. Here also `Chandanakkudam` festival is celebrated every year. The processions of this festival always attract a large crowd at this place. The people of the locality as a whole join the celebrations.
