Manu Temple is situated 3km from the Main Bazaar in Old Manali, near the Hidimba Devi Temple. It is believed that this temple is the only such specimen in India that is dedicated to Manu, the ancient lawmaker. Manali is said to have received its name from sage Manu, who is believed to have inhabited here. The idol of Manu was supposedly found in the courtyard of the house of a person named Gauri of Dhauni Chauni. The present temple is constructed on the said spot. On the 6th day of Phalgun, the famous Phagli fair is held here in honour of Manu Maharaj every year. Manu Smriti (arguably one of the oldest and most imperative of the smritis-books that contain the laws needed to be followed in various orders of life) was written by him.
