Makara is also depicted as a zodiac sign, the Capricorn. Makara is portrayed as a fish body with an elephant`s head.

Makara is also assigned as the pennant of the god of love. Varuna, the god of the sea, rides upon it through the waves, showing it to have been a fish of some sort. It is now the name of a shark in many parts of India.
