Mahamagha also known as Magha Purnima is the appearance of the full moon on an auspicious day of the month of Magha (January-February)
Mahamagha occurs once in every twelve years and the time is regarded as sacred for bathing or the holy bath. It is believed that after the holy bath all the suffering and misdeed in one`s life is washed away and the soul is purified.
At Khumbakhonam there is a large tank, the water of which is supposed to rise once in twelve years, on the Mahamagha. At this time thousands of Hindu devotees gather from different places to take a dip in the holy waters.
