Lionel Robert Ashburner

Lionel Robert Ashburner served as one of the Acting Governors of Bombay Presidency in the year 1880, under the rule of the British East India Company in former undivided India. He was also a prominent British colonial administrator. Ashburner was born in the year 1827 in Tasmania as the son of William Page Ashburner. His father was a member of the British Indian Civil Service (ICS). Lionel Robert Ashburner was appointed as the Acting Governor of Bombay Presidency on 13 March 1880 and was preceded by Sir Richard Temple, 1st Baronet, FRS, GCSI, CIE, PC, who retired as the Governor of Bombay on 13 March 1880.

The Bombay Presidency was one of the Presidencies and provinces of British India. It was first founded in the 17th century at Surat as a trading post for the British East India Company. Bombay Province was among the 3 presidencies of the former British India along with Bengal Presidency and Madras Presidency. The Presidency included the territories of modern states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, regions of Konkan, Kandesh and Desh and northwestern Karnataka state. Lionel Robert Ashburner served in office till 28 April 1880 and was succeeded by Sir James Fergusson, 6th Baronet GCSI, PC.

Lionel Robert Ashburner was married with Emily Caroline Haggard on 14 July 1873 at Kirkee, Bombay. He died in the year 1907 in Marylebone, London.
