In the Hindu mythology it is mentioned that Lingayits is a caste who carry the `Lingam` or emblem of Shiva tied round their necks. The Lingayits keep the Lingam or Linga in a gold or silver case, and also tie it up in a cloth and worn it round the neck. The Lingayits are mainly the traders in grain and species.
The Lingayits consists of many races; they do not intermarry, but can eat together. They are very stationary in their habits and are respected by other castes, but regarded as exceedingly stubborn, especially when irritated. They inter the remains of their guru or priest in a mosque, after the Muslim fashion, and their devotion to the worship of the tomb cannot be surpassed. They bury their dead and it is their custom to assemble round a corpse and partake of food before interring it. They universally abstain from animal food and intoxicating liquors. The women of Lingayits race are very good looking.
