Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary spread over two "jheels" or shallow lakes near the villages of Lakh and Bahosi, which is about four kilometres. Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary in Kannauj district of Uttar Pradesh is a place of local and exotic birds.
Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is situated at about 40 kilometres from Kannauj. Primarily Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary. Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is the home of species from 49 genres, of the 97 inhabiting birds in India. Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is one of India`s larger bird sanctuaries, stretching over 80 square kilometres including also a stretch of the Upper Ganges canal.
Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is five kilometres from Indergarh Police Station. It is about 35 km from Kannauj bus stand on the Grand Trunk Road National Highway No-91.
In Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary, there is a lake called Bahosi Lake. This lake of pristine beauty has spread over 3 square kilometres. This lake is the attraction to the tourists, both national and international. Beside the Bahosi Lake, Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is the home to various migratory birds from November to March. In this place, the jackal, blue bull, mongoose, fishing cat and monkeys is spotted. A separate lake at nearby Lakh village hosts some similar species, though the relative ecology is somewhat different. The best time to visit the Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary is December to February.
Among the more common birds of Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary several hundred little grebe, rooting about the shallows in straggly lines. Asian open-bills, stilts, egrets, Pied kingfishers are the common visitors of Lakh Bahosi Sanctuary. The White-breasted water hen and kingfisher, hoopoe, ashy-crowned lark, little and greater cormorants - in the sanctuary and also commonly found.
