The Kudandaikaaronam Temple is associated with the Mahamagam festival that occurs every 12 years. It is believed that the waters of none most revered rivers come together in the pond - the mahmagam tank. This temple is the 28th in the series of Tevara Stalams in the Chola kingdom located south of the river Kaveri.
Legend of Kudandaikaaronam Temple: Rama and Lakshman worshipped Shiva here during their search for Sita, and acquired Rudramsam, to enable them to fight Ravana. Legend states that the nine sacred rivers of India, prayed to Shiva at Banares to be absolved of the sins washed by bathers, and they were directed to bathe in the Mahamagam tank and worship Aadi Kumbheswarar. Viswanathar of Kaasi is believed to have manifested himself here at Kumbhakonam at Kudandaikkaronam.
History of Kudandaikaaronam Temple: The name Kayarohana is associated with the Lakulisa Pasupata Saiva sect, which originated in Gujarat. This sect was widespread in Tamilnadu during the days of Mahendravarma Pallavan.
Temple: This temple has two prakarams and a 72 ft high Rajagopuram. It is situated on the Northern bank of the Mahamagam tank. Images of the nine river Goddesses can be seen in this temple.
Festivals of Kudandaikaaronam Temple: Masi Magam is the most important festival that is celebrated here. Other festivals include Arudra Darisanam, Kartikai Deepam, Aadi Pooram and Navaratri.
