Kishori Amonkar is an illustrious Hindusthani classical vocalist who belongs to the Jaipur-Atrauli Gharana. She usually sings `khayal`. This eminent classical vocalist was born on 10th April in the year 1931. She was born to well known vocalist mother Smt. Mogubai Kurdikar and father Madhavdas Bhatiya. Kishori Amonkar started her training in Indian classical music under the guidance of her mother. Eventually she managed to absorb the inalienable qualities of Jaipur-Atrauli gharana of music. Today she is known for her unique style that she developed over the years through rigorous training.
Amonkar did playback singing for the movie Geet Gaya Patharon Ne. She also sang for the 1990 Hindi movie Drishti. She has formed many compositions for a number of raagas. Her students include Manik Bhide, Meena Joshi, Suhasini Mulgaonkar, and Mira Panshikar.
Through her singing career she has been conferred with several illustrious awards as recognition to her talent. She has been awarded with the title "Gana Saraswati", i.e. the Saraswati of Singing. Kishori has bagged Padma Bhushan in 1987 and Padma Vibhushan in 2002. Apart from these awards, she gained conferred the `Sangeet Natak Akademi Award` in the year 1985 and `Sangeet Samragni Award`, which means `Queen of Singing` in the year 1997. She was awarded with the Sangeet Natak Academy Fellowship for 2009.
Kishori Amonkar got married to Ravindra Amonka. The couple is blessed with two sons.
