Kesava Temple in Kashmir

Kesava Temple is situated at Andarkot, a town of considerable archaeological importance, in Baramulla district. The temple also holds great archaeological magnitude; however, due to age and neglect, the shrine is now under a pitiable state, demanding immediate attention. The focal attractors of the Kesava temple are the sculptured reliefs on two faces of the pilaster of the stair. One of the sculptures contains the idol of Lord Vishnu. The four-armed deity is seated on a cushioned throne and an attendant; probably a female stands on the left side. The other relief on the front panel shows a group of three figures-Vishnu seated between his two consorts. Most of the sculptures found in the temple date back to the 7th and 8th century. Andarkot is about a mile away from Sumbal. Andarkot can be reached from Baramulla by road; the nearest railhead is Jammu.
