In the Puranas the Kayasth is mentioned as the Writer caste. Their origin is not sure. The Kayasth themselves assert that their common predecessor, on the father`s side, was a Brahman.
Again it is believed that the Kayasth sprang from a Kshatriya father and a Vaisya mother. In point of education, intelligence, and enterprise, this caste occupies deservedly a high position. However they are notorious for their drinking and gambling tendency. They are renowned for spending a lot of money in the marriage ceremony.
