The revered Sage Koudinya resided in his ashrama in here. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva prayed to Ganesha before fighting the demon Tripurasura. Lord Ganesha promised to provide support to the gods during the combat. Hence it is also known Kutachal or Ganeshgiri. The region was also the capital of the Hoysala Empire.
