Kamakhya

Kamakhya is a Tantric mother goddess who is closely linked to Goddess Kali and Maha Tripura Sundari. Kamakhya means "renowned goddess of desire," and she resides at the temple in the form of a stone yoni. There are some celebrated temples in Assam dedicated to the goddess under this form.

Kamakhya is also related to an important goddess of the Khasi tribe. She is also mentioned in the Kalika Purana as an important goddess of Tantric worship. Devotees also call her Kameshwari and Shodashi. Kamakhya is also associated with the Dasa Mahavidyas. Kamakhya is shown as a young goddess with twelve arms and six heads of varying colors. She is typically wearing a red sari, rich jewellery and red flowers. She holds in each of ten hands a lotus, trident, sword, bell, discus, bow, arrows, club, goad, and shield. The other two hands hold a bowl, which is made either of gold or a skull.

One receives the ultimate spiritual liberation by worshipping Kamakhya. The Kamakhya temple is one of the most important Shakta pilgrimages in the world.
