John FitzGibbon, formally addressed as Sir John FitzGibbon, 2nd Earl of Clare KP GCH PC, was appointed as the Governor of Bombay Presidency from the year 1831 to 1835. He was also one of the renowned a colonial administrators. In the year 1802, Sir John FitzGibbon succeeded to the titles of Baron FitzGibbon in the Peerage of Great Britain and Earl of Clare in the Irish Peerage. FitzGibbon was born on 10 July 1792 as the son of John FitzGibbon, 1st Earl of Clare and his wife, Anne. He successfully completed his education from Harrow School and later studied graduation at Christ Church in Oxford in the year 1812. He was active in the House of Lords from the year 1820.
Sir John FitzGibbon, 2nd Earl of Clare KP GCH PC, was appointed as a Privy Councillor in 1830. He was appointed as the Governor of Bombay Presidency on 21 March 1831 and was preceded by Sir John Romer, who retired as the Governor of Bombay. Bombay Presidency was one of the Presidencies and provinces of British India. It was first founded in the 17th century at Surat as a trading post for the British East India Company. The Presidency included the territories of modern states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, regions of Konkan, Kandesh and Desh and northwestern Karnataka state. John FitzGibbon served in office till 17 March 1835 and was succeeded by Sir Robert Grant GCH.
John FitzGibbon was knighted as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Guelphic Order in 1835. He was made a member of the Royal Asiatic Society from the year 1839 and was honoured as a Knight of St Patrick in 1845. Later he was appointed as Deputy Lieutenant of the County of Limerick from the year 1846 to 1849. FitzGibbon also acted as Lord Lieutenant of the City of Limerick. He also acted as Earl of Clare in the Peerage of Ireland. Sir John FitzGibbon was also appointed as Baron FitzGibbon in the Peerage of Great Britain from the year 1802 to 1851. Sir John FitzGibbon, 2nd Earl of Clare KP GCH PC died on 18 August 1851.
