Jhanyari Devi Temple is situated on the Hamirpur-Nadaun road, at a distance of 6km from Hamirpur town in Himachal Pradesh. The temple is more than 200 years old and is managed by a local committee. Every year on the `Jeshth-Shukla` `ashtami` a fair is held in the temple premises. During this period the locals and people from far off places throng to the temple in huge figures. Jhanyari Devi Temple bears immense historical importance and was built by a king of the Katoch Dynasty, who used to worship this respective Goddess as the kul-devi (patron Goddess).
According to legends, the goddess had guided the king in his dreams to establish a temple in the present day temple complex. The king set out on his journey to bring the Goddess, as was directed, along with a huge procession, in a `palki` (palanquin). The procession reached its objective and placed the palanquin on the ground to fetch the idol of the goddess. But just as they had started lifting the palanquin, they were unable to do so, because the weight increased by manifolds. Consequently, the procession, along with the king had to stay back in the said place. At night, the king dreamt once again that the Goddess was instructing him not to place the palanquin on ground, once it has been lifted. Hence a conclusion was reached that the temple should be established in the very place itself , the result of which is the present-day Jhanyari Devi Temple.
