Jeevak Amravana Vihar is a monastery with large elliptical walls which has been recently excavated and identified as "Jeevak Amravana", mentioned in the Buddhist texts as a favorite retreat of Lord Buddha. While moving toward Gridhakuta hill, on the eastern side of the base of Chhan Giri hill, Jeevak Amravana Vihar is situated. Foundations and walls of some huge circular rooms and rectangular rooms have been found here. The structure of this building is different from the structure of other Buddhist Viharas.
Legend of Jeevak Amravana Vihar
"Jeevak", the son of Salavati, a courtesan of Rajagriha with "Abhayarajakumara", son of King Bimbisara, studied Medicine at Taxila and became the royal physician of Magadha. King Bimbisara gave Jeevak a mango orchard, where he resided and which was known as "Jeevak Amravana". Lord Buddha came here when he was injured by his cousin Devadatta out of jealousy. Jeevak bandaged his wound and gifted his Amravana to Lord Buddha and thus the Vihara was built here.
