Javari temple

Javari Temple was built between c. 975 and 1100 A.D. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The main idol of the temple is broken and headless.

Javari temple, Khajuraho, Madhya PradeshJavari temple is located in the eastern area of Khajuraho. It is near as well as visible from Vamana Temple and at a distance of about 200 meters from it. It has well-proportioned architecture, with sanctum, vestibule, mandapa and portico, but without pradakshinapatha. It has a Makara Torana (Capricorn Arch) and beautiful shikhara (top). It also has three bands of beautifully carved sculptures on the outer wall. The temple resembles Chaturbhuja Temple, Khajuraho.

The main idol of Vishnu of the temple is broken and headless. The entrance gate of sanctum has sculptures depicting navagraha on the top. Along with navagraha sculptures, sculpture of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are also seen

The temple has two bands of sculpture on the outer wall. The elaborate gateway of the Javari Temple in Khajuraho, Madhya Pradesh is one of its characteristic features. The various sculptures on the walls of the temples depict men and women in various postures. The interior of the Javari Temple, Khajuraho is also covered with exquisite sculptures.

It is a small but well-proportioned nirandhara temple, consisting of a sanctum, vestibule mandapa and portico. It is remarkable as much for its ornate makara-torana as for the slender and soaring outline of its sikhara. Temple shows two significant architectural features. The dainty roof over the porch grows to meet the pyramidal mandap roof and this leads the eye to the shikhara above the sanctum. The temple consists of a long porch entered through a nice stone toran. The makara toran has four decorated loops crowned by a kirtimukha. The mandap is small.
