The impact of Cripps mission was visible in the reaction of the Congress party leaders who got fragmented over the issue. While Mahatma Gandhi was not prepared for any compromise with the foreigners over the Independence of India, the other side of Congress Right leaders under Chakravarti Rajagopalachari wanted to step further towards the talk which would present a better future to India. This created turmoil within the party which was simultaneously counter used by the other parties. As such the impact of Cripps Mission can be assessed as separate reaction by separate parties keeping in mind their own personal interest.
Reaction of Indian National Congress
The Cripps Mission which aimed at providing a dominion status to India as well as allowing India to have freedom to whether join or leave the commonwealth, further wanted India to create its own Lower House which would act as a single electoral college and in the course of the time create its own Constitution - making body; resulted in a number of reactions all over the country. As far as Indian National Congress was concerned it went through a division of opinion. While the Right wing of Congress was going restless with Gandhi, s civil disobedience towards the British policies and it wanted to take risky step by believing the foreign rulers who had made large promise, the left wing on a contrary had no faith on the rulers simply chose to disbelieve them altogether. This formed the agenda of Bardoli session in which Rajagopalachari tried to persuade others to ignore Gandhi and Nehru and try to make a political progress.
Reaction of the Muslim League
The reaction of Muslim league on the other hand was different where it gave full support to Cripps Mission under the leadership of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Afraid of British annoyance towards congress reaction, Jinnah made all efforts to show the opposition of Muslim league towards the Bardoli resolution and presented its full support to Cripps Mission.
The British officials however failed to read through the genuine support of the Congress Right to the war and as a reaction tried to blame Congress for hiding their drift. As a result Churchill decided to keep such a hostile political front to war which would only paralyze the system. Though the Indian army fought vigorously on the eastern front when Japanese army came at the doors of Burma, their allegiance was towards the King who finally withdrew from the entire plan. It was only with the Labour Party which came to power after the war took the initiative to give India its long awaited Independence in 1947 after the war was over.
Thus, the impact of Cripps Mission remains very significant Indian history as it brought forth the growing differences among the Congress party and its increasing distance with Muslim League which only ended up with the Partition of India. It also brought in the open the drift between Gandhi and Rajagopalachari. Moreover for the first time after the proposal of Cripps Mission, the partition of India and formation of Pakistan appeared plausible.
