Herbert Mills Birdwood

Herbert Mills Birdwood served as one of the Acting Governors of Bombay Presidency in the year 1895, in former undivided India under the rule of the British East India Company. He was also one of the renowned a colonial administrators. Birdwood completed his education from at Plymouth Grammar School at Exeter and later studied at the Edinburgh University and at Peterhouse in Cambridge. Herbert Mills Birdwood was appointed as the Acting Governor of Bombay Presidency on 16 February 1895 and was preceded by George Robert Canning Harris, 4th Baron Harris, GCSI, GCIE (George Harris), who retired as the Governor of Bombay on 16 February 1895.

The Bombay Presidency was one of the Presidencies and provinces of British India. It was first founded in the 17th century at Surat as a trading post for the British East India Company. The Presidency included the territories of modern states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, regions of Konkan, Kandesh and Desh and northwestern Karnataka state. Birdwood served in office till 18 February 1895 and was succeeded by Sir William Mansfield, 1st Viscount Sandhurst GCSI, GCIE, GCVO, PC.

Herbert Mills Birdwood was married with Edith Marion Sidonie Impey, who was the daughter of Sergeant Major Elijah George Halhed Impey. The couple had 6 children including William Birdwood, 1st Baron Birdwood, who eventually held the rank of Field Marshal; and Halhed Brodrick Birdwood, who later held the rank of Brigadier General in the British military.
