Hema Sardesai is a successful Indian playback singer and lyricist. She shot to fame in the 1990s with songs from Bollywood movies like "Sapnay", "Biwi No. 1" and "Jaanam Samjha Karo". She has sung in various genres such as Indian Classical, Light Indian Classical, Hindi film music, Western Pop music and Spiritual Folk. She has also released several Indipop albums.
Early Life of Hema Sardesai
Hema Sardesai was born in Mumbai. At the age of 6, Hema"s talent started branching out. She made her stage debut at just the age of 8. She has participated at the inter-state, national and international levels in different languages like English, Hindi and Marathi.
Career of Hema Sardesai
Hema Sardesai started perusing her career in playback singing from the year 1989. She made her debut with the film "Goonj", singing for actress Juhi Chawla. Afterwards, she sang for many celebrated actresses like, Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Karishma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Tabu, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen and Kareena Kapoor. Hema has worked with renowned music directors like Anu Malik, A.R. Rahman, Rajesh Roshan, Nadeem-Shravan, Vishal Bhardwaj and Pritam. She has performed in many concerts in countries like, USA, UK, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands, West Indies, Thailand, Nepal and Indonesia and so on.
Hema Sardesai has also bagged the honour of accompanying in singing duets with four superstars like, Amitabh Bachchan (for the film "Baghban"), Naseeruddin Shah (for the film "Asambhav"), Govinda (for the film "Hum Do Hamara Do") and Shahrukh Khan (for the film "Josh").
Achievements of Hema Sardesai
Hema Sardesai is the only Indian singer who has won the "Grand Prix" at the 16th International Pop Song Festival in Germany. She also earned the honour of being chosen to perform at the celebrations for the 50th year of Indian Independence other than the legendary Lata Mangeshkar. She has obtained the prestigious "Sangeet Visharad" degree in Indian Classical music. She was also conferred the title, "Audience Darling Prize". The German Media named her, "Indian Nightingale". For her pop album "Hindustani Gudiya" she was nominated "Best Indian Female Pop Album" at the Zee Music Awards in 2002. She was selected as the "Best Female Playback Singer" for the song “Hai Re Hai Re†from the film "Khushi". The award was given to her by the Afternoon Newspaper Polls, in 2003. Acknowledging her contribution, the All India Woman"s Conference conferred her with the "Gomant Tejaswini Award" in the year 2006.

Some social achievements by Hema Sardesai can be counted like - her performing for numerous charitable functions at the Aids Concert, (Wizcraft), Chowpatty - Mumbai; Kargil Soldiers Fund, for "Mukti" - Mumbai; National Festival of Music and Dance, for the persons with mental retardation - Hyderabad; Concert for Lathur earthquake victims - Mumbai; The MTV concerts for AIDS Awareness in Mumbai, for three consecutive years; Journalists Nite - Goa; Tsunami Concert - Sony TV; Art of Living, Kullu Shibir - Kullu. She has also delineated India at the International UNICEF concert in Yugoslavia. Hema took up the social cause of "The Save Goa" campaign in March 2007, and for that noble gesture, she organised many concerts at several public gatherings and exhibitions across Goa. In November 2001, Coca Cola pronounced Hema as "The Queen of Indipop".
