Haveri District is a prominent district in the south Indian state of Karnataka. It is located in the centre of Karnataka and is equidistant from Bidar District in the north and Kollegal in the south. It is encircled by the districts of Dharwad in the north, Gadag in the northeast, Davangere in the south, Bellary District in the east, Shimoga District in the southwest and Uttar Kannada District on the west and northwest.
Geography of Haveri District
The district headquarters is in Haveri, which is an important trading town and has a number of educational institutions. The rivers flowing through the district are Varada River, Dharma River, Kumudvati River and Tungabhadra River. Before becoming a separate district, Haveri was a part of Dharwad district.
Demography of Haveri District
According to the Population Census in the year 2011, the Haveri District had a population of 1,598,506 of which male and female were 819,295 and 779,211 respectively. The average literacy rate of Haveri District in 2011 was 77.60 percent. If things are looked out at gender wise, male and female literacy were 84.22 percent and 70.65 percent respectively. The total literates in Haveri District were 1,094,805 of which male and female were 608,727 and 486,078 respectively. The important towns in the district are Haveri, which is the seat of administration in the district, Ranibennur, a business hub, Hangal, Akki-alur, Kumar Pattanam, Byadgi, Bankapura, Kaginele and Rattihalli.
Culture of Haveri District
The district has an agricultural and an industrial base. The district is dotted with numerous temples, which are mostly located in Byadgi, Ranibennur and Savanur. The main festival celebrated in the district is Makar Sankranti. Gangibavi village in the district attracts a lot of devotees from the northern part of Karnataka during the festival.
