Haryanka Dynasty

Haryanka dynasty succeeded the Barhadratha dynasty. This dynasty probably ruled in 684 B.C. The capital of the kingdom was Rajagriha that was initially shifted to Pataliputra. Shishunaga dynasty succeeded Haryanka dynasty. As per tradition it is believed that the Haryanka dynasty founded the Magadha Empire in 684 BC.

The Haryanka king Bimbisara expanded the boundaries of the kingdom through matrimonial alliances and conquest. He is considered to be the contemporary of Lord Mahavira and follower of Jainism.

Under Bimbisara`s son and successor, Ajatashatru the kingdom expanded. It is believed that he ruled from 551 to 519 BCE.

According to the Mahavamsa text Udayabhadra succeeded his father, Ajatashatru. He shifted the capital of the Magadha kingdom to Pataliputra. It is believed that he ruled for sixteen years.

The kingdom had a bloody progression. Udaybhadra was succeeded by Anuruddha through assassination and his son Munda succeeded him similarly. His son Nagadasaka succeeded his father through his father`s assassination. It is considered that a public revolt led to the emergence of the Shishunaga dynasty. The people of Magadha removed the last five in 413 BC and appointed a Viceroy Shishunaga as the King.
