Grishneshwar Temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of India. It is a holy dwelling of Lord Shiva. This temple is located around eleven km from Daulatabad which is near Aurangabad in Maharashtra. It is located near Ellora Caves.
The temple was re-constructed by Maloji Raje Bhosale of Verul in the 16th century. Later again it was reconstructed by Ahilyabai Holkar in the 18th century. There is a legend that is associated with this temple. It says that a pious woman named Kusuma worshipped Lord Shiva daily by immersing a Shivalingam in a tank. The first wife of her husband became jealous of Kusuma`s piety and murdered her son. Kusuma was depressed, however she continued her worship and it so happened that when she immersed the Shivalingam again in the tank, her son was restored to life. It is believed that Lord Shiva appeared in front of her and the villagers, and then one is believed to have been worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlinga Ghusmeshwar.
The temple is made of red volcanic rocks. It has a five tier Shikara that is crowned with images of Bull and Monkeys. Maha Shivaratri is one of the major festivals that are celebrated here.
