The Gaumukh Temple in Mount Abu is considered one of the most sacred places for worship by the Hindus. It is believed that this pilgrim center must be visited at least once by a Hindu devotee. A flight of 700 stairs will lead the travelers to the temple. The name of the shrine literally means `the mouth of the cow` (Gau means cow and `mukh` is mouth.). As one reaches the topmost part of the temple he or she will be taken aback by the scenic beauty that surrounds it. As far as the holy shrine is considered its main significance is that it is the sacred spot of water reservoir that emerges out of the mouth of the lord.
The `gau` at the Gaumukh temple is Nandi. Associated with Lord Shiva the temple has become particularly important for the Shaivites. However it would be wrong to say that the temple is visited by them only. Lord Shiva is worshipped in almost all parts of India. Large numbers of people are followers of the lord. Hence tourists as well devotees visit the temple throughout the year. What is striking about this temple is its simplicity. As one enters the shrine he will come across a statue of Nandi. Near this statue the idols of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna are also located.
The history of the temple dates back to the era of Rishi Vashishth. It is said that he had performed a great yagna at this place to please the gods and goddesses and seek their blessings for the welfare of the earth. Such legends too had made the Gaumukh temple in Mount Abu an important place of interest. Besides the religious significance such holy shrines reflect the religious beliefs of the people as well.
