Built in 1769, the Fort George was an extension to the fortified walls of the Bombay Fort and is currently the only remaining vestige of the Bombay Fort that was built by the British. The Fort George was built on the exact same hill, where the Dongri Fort earlier stood.
Overview of Fort George
Standing tall at a height of 43 ft, the Fort George was 1 mile long and about 500 m wide. It was named in honour of George III of the United Kingdom. The Fort George was demolished in the year 1862 and currently stands as one of the protected monuments of Maharashtra. Presently, part of the fort is retained and is still seen today within the compound of the St. George Hospital.
