Egra

Egra is an ancient town located in the Purba Midnapore district of the eastern state of India, West Bengal. It is situated on the Kolkata - Digha road. The coastal town of Digha is situated at a distance of 50 km. It is the subdivisional headquarters of the Egra subdivision. Being a popular religious destination, it is well connected to the other places in the district; the bus service from Egra to Digha, Ramnagar, Khajuri and Nandigram is frequent.

The nearest international airport is at Kolkata at a distance of 210 km. It is located between 21.9° North latitude and 87.53° East longitude at a height of 11 metres (36 feet) above mean sea level.

As per the 2001 India census report, Egra had a population of 25, 180 inhabitants. While males consist of 51% of the population , females comprises 49% of the population. In Egra, 13% of the population is less than six years of age. Egra has an average literacy rate of 69% which is higher than national average literacy rate of 59.5%. The male literacy rate and the female literacy rate is 77% and 61% respectively.

Egra is an attraction because of its two ancient temples. The Radha-Benode Temple and Sarbhuj Mandir, bear ample testimony to the ancient Indian history and art. There is also a Shiva Mandir belonging to the 16th century.
