Early History of Radha reveals that she was a lively girl who was in love with Lord Krishna. She has been hardly referred in a few texts before Jayadeva`s Geeta Gobinda. Padma, Brahma vaivarta and Devi Bhagavata puranas that speak about her relationship with Krishna come much after Gitagovinda. She is a lively girl who is overpowered by her emotions. Venisamhara by Bhattanarayana speaks of her anger while making love to Krishna and was choked with tears while leaving him. In Dhvanyalokalochana of Abhinavgupta Radha is sad when Krishna leaves Vraja for Mathura. The same story is also narrated in Ksemendra`s Dasavataracharita (1066). Love is separation is clear in all these references.
However in later texts Radha`s illicit love is depicted. She is always associated with Krishna always. Before appearing as a heroine in Gitagovinda she was known to Indian literary tradition as a normal girl who is passionately in love with Lord Krishna. Love is expressed in form of separation from him thereby adding the illicit quality to it.
Radha was the daughter of Vrishbhanu. Vrishbhanu was King Suchandra in his previous life. Suchandra and his wife had acquired a boon from Lord Brahma that in the Dwapara yuga Goddess Lakshmi would be born as a daughter to them in form of Radha. Again King Suchendra and Queen Kalavati were reborn as Vrishbhanu and Kirtikumari.
