Dungar Singh, formally known as Sri Raj Rajeshwar Maharajadhiraja Narendra Maharaja Shiromani Sri Dungar Singh Bahadur was a well known ruler or Maharaja of the princely state of Bikaner. He ruled over the region from the year 1872 to 1887. He was born on 22nd August 1854 as the eldest of 3 sons of Maharaj Sri Lal Singh, who was a member of a branch of the Rathore dynasty. Maharaja Dungar Singh was a progressive and a liberal sovereign. In the year 1878, he sent his troops along with 800 camels to the Second Afghan War to provide support to the British East India Company.
Maharaja Shiromani Sri Dungar Singh Bahadur made significant efforts for the development of education and established the first Bikaner public school, as well as other colleges and educational institutes during his rule. He also organized the first modern police force and a current budget and fiscal standards; moreover he established a post office, dispensaries, a civil surgeon and even developed the state of the prisons.
Dungar Singh, Maharaja of the princely state of Bikaner, died at the age of 32 on 19th August 1887. Ganga Singh, his youngest brother succeeded Dungar Singh and ascended the royal throne of Bikaner, as he was adopted as his son.
