Tripura is one of the seven states in the north eastern part of India. Administratively, Tripura is divided into four districts; each district is headed by a Deputy Commissioner. Deputy Commissioner is assisted by several other officers. Tripura has 15 Sub-Divisions, 38 Rural Development Blocks, 31 Revenue Circles, 183 Tehsils, 874 Revenue Moujas, 962 Gram Panchayats, 3 Jilla Parishads, 18 Notified Areas and one Municipal Council. Tripura is located between 22 degree and 56 minutes and 24 degree and 32 minutes north latitude and between 90 degree and 9 minutes and 92 degree and 20 minutes east latitude. It is bounded on the north, west, south and south-east by Bangladesh whereas in the east it has a common boundary with Assam and Mizoram. The history of Tripura as an administrative unit dates back to the days of Maharajas when the territory was a native state.
The four districts of Tripura are as follows:
* Dhalai District
* North Tripura District
* South Tripura District
* West Tripura District
Dhalai District: Dhalai District is the youngest district in Tripura. It was formed in the year 1995. This district is rich in natural resources. More than 70 percent area of this district is hilly and forest covered. It has tremendous scenic beauty. Ambassa is the district headquarters.
North Tripura District: North Tripura District is one of the four administrative districts of Tripura. Kailashahar is the district headquarters. North Tripura District has three sub-divisions namely Dharmanagar, Kanchanpur and Kailashahar. In the year 1995, Dhalai District was carved out from North Tripura District.
South Tripura District: South Tripura District is one of four districts of Tripura with its headquarters at Udaipur, Tripura. This district came into being in the year 1970, when Tripura was divided into three administrative districts. South Tripura District includes five administrative sub divisions namely Udaipur, Amarpur, Belonia, Sabroom and Santirbazar.
West Tripura District: West Tripura District is one of the four administrative districts of Tripura. This district is bounded by Bangladesh in t95he north and west, by North Tripura District in the east, by South Tripura District in the south. Total area of the district is 3544 sq kms. The district headquarter is located at Agartala, which is also the capital of the state.
