Districts of Kerala

There are 14 revenue districts of Kerala and the state shares its borders with Karnataka on the north and Tamil Nadu on the south and east. The name of the most important city or town in almost all the districts of Kerala, shares the same name as the district itself, except for Wayanad district. The 14 districts are further segmented into 62 taluks, 999 revenue villages and 1007 Gram panchayats. Situated in the southern part of India, Kerala has the highest literacy rate and the longest life expectancy. It is the state which is well known for its rubber plantations. It is the most diverse state in terms of religion.

Districts of Coastal Kerala include districts like Ernakulam District, Alappuzha District, Kollam district, Kozhikode District, Thiruvananthapuram District, Kasaragod District and Malappuram district

Ernakulam is a district of Kerala. It is situated in the central part of that state. Ernakulam district is home to over 12% of Kerala"s population. Its headquarters is located at Kakkanad, a suburb of Kochi city. Ernakulam is known as the commercial capital of Kerala.

Alappuzha District was formed as Alleppey District on August 17, 1957. The name of the district was officially changed to Alappuzha in 1990. The district is a widely known tourist destination and is well known for its Coir factories.

Kollam district (formerly Quilon) is one of 14 districts of the state of Kerala, India. The district has a cross-section of Kerala`s natural attributes; it is endowed with a long coastline, a major Arabian Sea seaport and an inland lake (Ashtamudi Lake). The district has many sources of waterbodies. Kallada river is one among it and the east side land of river is East Kallada and the west side land is West Kallada. Kallada Boat race is one among the famous festival events of district. Even though it is a competition between two banks of river, many boat clubs from various places even beyond the district use to participate in the event. Kollam is the capital of Kerala`s cashew industry. Plains, mountains, lakes, lagoons and backwaters, forests, farmland and rivers make up the topography of the district. The area had trading relationships with Phoenicia and Ancient Rome.

Thiruvananthapuram District is the southernmost district of the coastal state of Kerala. It is the largest city in Kerala. It came into existence in the year 1957. The headquarters is the city of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) which is also the capital city of Kerala.

Kasaragod District is one of the 14 districts in the state of Kerala. Kasaragod became part of Kannur district following the re-organisation of states and formation of Kerala in November 1, 1956.

Kannur District is one of the 14 districts along the west coast in the state of Kerala. The town of Kannur is the district headquarters and gives the district its name. Kannur district is bounded by Kasaragod District to the north, Kozhikode district to the south and Wayanad District to the southeast. Eastern side of the district is bounded by the Western Ghats Mountain Range in India, which forms the border with the state of Karnataka (Kodagu district). The Arabian Sea lies to the west.

Kozhikode District is a district of Kerala. It is located on the southwest coast of India. The city of Kozhikode, formerly known as Calicut, is the district headquarters. The district is 38.25% urbanized.

Malappuram district was formed on 16th June 1969. Malappuram district is composed of portions of the former Palakkad and Kozhikode districts: Ernad taluk and portions of Tirur taluk in Kozhikode district, and portions of Perinthalmannna and Ponnani taluks in Palakkad district.

Thrissur District is a revenue district of Kerala. It is situated in the central part of that state. It is spanning over an area of about 3,032 square km. Thrissur district is home to over 10% of Kerala"s population. Thrissur district was formed on July 1, 1949, with the headquarters at Thrissur City. Thrissur is known as the cultural capital of Kerala, and the land of Poorams. The district is famous for its ancient temples, churches, and mosques.

Kottayam district is an ideal tourist destination with its backwater stretches, lush paddy fields, and its vast network of rivers and canals.

Palakkad district is a hotspot for tourists with the Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary, with its abundant wildlife, the Nelliyampathy hills and the Kattilmadam temple on the Pattambi- Guruvayoor road. Palakkad District is one of the 14 districts of the Indian state of Kerala. The city of Palakkad is the district headquarters. Palakkad District is bordered on the northwest by the Malappuram District, on the southwest by the Thrissur District, on the northeast by the Nilgiris District and on the east by Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. Palakkad District is 24.4% urbanised according to the population census of 2011. The district is nicknamed "the granary of Kerala" and "Rice bowl of Kerala". Palakkad District has a tropical wet and dry climate. The temperatures of Palakkad District remain moderate throughout the year, with exception in March and April being the hottest months. A very high amount of precipitation is received in Palakkad, mainly due to the South-West monsoon. July is the wettest month, and the total annual rainfall is around 83 inches.

Pathanamthitta district is a district in the southern part of Kerala. The district headquarters is in the town of Pathanamthitta. However, Tiruvalla city is the largest commercial centre in the district. Kottayam District, Idukki District, Alappuzha District and Kollam district surrounded the district. Pathanamthitta district has a border with the state of Tamil Nadu in the east. Pathanamthitta, Tiruvalla, Adoor, Konni, Ranni and Mallapally are the taluks in the district. There are four municipalities in Pathanamthitta District. They are Tiruvalla, Adoor, Pathanamthitta and Pandalam.

Wayanad district is covered with vast stretches of forest reserves. An idyllic tourist destination the major attractions of the district are the Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary and the Sentinel Rock Waterfall at Vellarimala village.

Idukki is one of the 14 districts of Kerala state. This district was created on 26th January 1972. At that time, the district headquarters was at Kottayam. In June 1976, Idukki District was moved to Painavu. Idukki lies in the Western Ghats Mountain Range of India. It is the second largest district in area but has the lowest population density. Idukki has a vast forest reserve area; more than a half of the district is covered by forests. The urban areas are densely populated whereas villages are sparsely populated.
