Overview of Dhar Fort
The Dhar Fort was a strategic military outpost that used to be a fortified stronghold of every ruling dynasty in central India. Even though, the construction of the Dhar Fort began during the time of the Paramaras but the battlements, cells of sentinels, outer walls, gates etc. bear the mark of Islamic architecture. In 1344 A.D, Muhammad bin Tughlaq rested at this fort on his way to Daulatabad.

Ancient sources state that the gates and battlements of the fort were built by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, who also repaired parts of the fort. Eventually, on the arrival of the Marathas and the Pawars, the Dhar Fort regained its former glory and was made the capitals of these dynasties. The fort also became their administrative centre and residence.

The Kharbuja Mahal premises were also built at the same time. The other buildings and barracks in the fort seem to have been built in the 19th and 20th century A.D. Inside the fort premises, there is a deep rock cut cistern and a palace with an outdoor museum.
