Situated 20 miles northwest of Aurangabad more than 600 feet above the Deccan Plateau, Daulatabad is a beautiful city in the western state of Maharastra. Daulatabad means the city of fortunes or the city of prosperity and was named by Muhammad bin Tughlaq of the Tughlaq dynasty.
Formerly known as Devagiri meaning hill of the gods it was the 12th century fortress capital of the Hindu kings of Deccan. Bhillama, a general of the Yadav dynasty constructed the pyramid shaped fortress in Devagiri. Thick walls, spiked gates, steep graveled slide ways and a deep moat surround the fort. However this capital city is now reduced to a village. The place is well connected by rail and roadways. Aurangabad Airport is located 10 km. east of the town and is the nearest airport and is linked to Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur and Udaipur. Aurangabad Railway station is the nearest railway station.
Nearby attractions of Daulatabad is Chinese Palace, better known as Chini Mahal, Chand Minar and Baradi, the residence of Yadavi queen. The Chand Minar is a tower 210 feet in height and 70 feet in circumference at the base. The best time to visit Daulatabad is between July and December.
