Dehradun Mounted Rifles

The Dehradun Mounted Rifles, also known as the Dehra Dun Mounted Rifles regiment was a volunteer or auxiliary unit of the British Indian Army. The unit was a part of the Volunteer Corps and was under the administration of the Bengal Command. It was formed on 24th July 1885 and was later renamed as the Dehra Dun Mounted Rifles in 1890. The headquarters of the Dehradun Mounted Rifles was established in Dehra Dun (Dehradun). The uniform of the troops included khaki drill.

One of the detached companies of the battalion was stationed at Chakrata in 1901. The regiment was designated as the Dehra Dun Mounted Rifles on 23rd May 1890. It was renamed a number of times through its service. The armed force was merged with Mounted Troop of the Nainital Volunteer Rifles in 1909 to raise the United Provinces 2nd (Northern) Regiment.

Later in 1917, the Dehradun Mounted Rifles was redesignated as 8th (Northern Regiment) United Provinces Horse. Eventually it was named as the United Provinces Horse (Northern Regiment) in 1920.
