Dandaniti is a policy and one of the four branches of royal knowledge. Dandaniti is originally written by Vishnugupta in six thousand stanzas for the use of the Maurya kings.

Dandaniti literally means the use or employment of rod and obviously refers to the earliest method of inflicting punishment on wrong doers by the ruler.
