Churches of Tripura in Indian State stand as testaments of prevailing Christianity in the state. Although the state hosts a small number of churches, still their popularity hovers all around the country. Built in ancient times, the churches have been well preserved through years as significant monuments of the country. The Christian devotees of the state have been greatly served by these churches and great care has been bestowed on the churches.

Churches of Tripura Mariamnagar Church
Mariamnagar church is situated amidst the majestic natural beauty in a lush green backdrop in Mariamnagar, which is considered as a historical site near Agartala. It is an ancient Catholic Church and was initially used by Portuguese settlers. Tripura had witnessed momentary settlement of Portuguese in the state in 1577 during the war of King Amar Manikya against the rampaging Mog tribal army. The King had sought the help of Portuguese as mercenaries in the war which resulted in their settlement. The war had ended in the year 1585 with their help. These Portuguese later shifted to Mariamnagar in the period when king Krishna Kishore Manikya had shifted his capital to Agartala from `Purani Haveli" in 1838. However the descendents of the Portuguese settles had by now blended with the local population. Mariamnagar Church built during that era still stand as an important place of worship for Christians and as a magnificent monument narrating an aspect of India`s history.
