Design of Chiktan Fort
The historic fort of Chiktan with its mud and stone masonry is placed within a deep valley on the banks of the Indus River and was built as per the designs of architect and carpenter Shinkhen Chandan. Timber was used to support the ceilings of the structure and also as door and window frames.

Also as a palace, the architecture of Chiktan Fort is a fine example of Tibetan architecture. The Chiktan Fort was a symbol of unity, strength, brotherhood and community for the people of the region. The castle was attacked several times during history, but was not abandoned until the late 19th century.

Recent Scenario of Chiktan Fort
Once a significant political centre and military fortification, the Chiktan Fort is currently in an advanced state of decay due to neglect and natural elements. Large portions of the outer walls have collapsed, partially due to the removal of stone in the mid 20th century for a local government hospital.
