Legend: Garutmantha is said to have fought Devendra when he brought Madupatra from heaven to release his mother from servitude.
There are eight temples here dedicated to Lord Siva, and hence regarded as important as Kasi, hence the name Dakshinakasi. The Channakesava temple forms an integral part of Pushpagiri temple with mini-shrines and a two-storied tower over the gate. It was built by a Chola king and has the Vesara type of architecture. The idol is six feet in height. There is a small temple dedicated to Rajyalakshmi close by. The sculptures and murals narrate stories from the Ramayana and the Mahabharata.
There is place here dedicated to the padukas of Lord Rudrapadam and Vishnupadam. Also the four rivers - Papaghni, Mandavi, Kumudvathi, Valkal join the river Penna here. The temple also contains the Srichakra installed by Adisankaraacharya.
Festivals: The annual Brahmotsav lasts for 10 days during Vaisakha.
