Charudatta

Charudatta is an impoverished Brahman who is one of the principal characters in the drama of the Toy Cart. He belonged to a large class of Hindus. Charudatta was born to a respectable and rich family of Ujjain. He got happily married to a loving wife but later he reduced himself to poverty by a reckless prodigality.

Charudatta was very virtuous and noble. He spent all his money for the well being of others than for his own benefit. Charudatta beautified the Ujjain city by setting up many gardens, gates, viharas, temples, wells and fountains. Thus, all his relatives and friends became rich and he was left with the ornaments of his wife and the alms collected during various occasions. Charudatta still continued to live in the family mansion but it was devoid of any ornamentation and sound of music and feast. As his wealth diminished, people who used to relish on them started neglecting Charudatta. Thereafter, he could take shelter in any hermitage following the old Brahmanical tradition. But, Charudatta could not abandon his wife and son so he was required to live on daily mortifications.
