Chandrayana is said to be penances as per the Vedanta.

Chandrayana is said to be penances. As per to the Vedanta, Chandrayana cause not the acquisition of any thing positive but merely removes the sin. Chandrayana are regulated by the moon`s age and consist in diminishing the daily consumption of food every day by one mouthful, for the dark half of the month, beginning with fifteen at the full moon. It continues until it is reduced to one at the new moon and then increasing in like manner during the fortnight of the moon`s increase.
