Chaiturgarh Fort

The Chaiturgarh Fort is an archaeological monument in the state of Chhattisgarh.

Chaiturgarh Fort, ChhattisgarhSituated atop a hill at a height of about 3,060 ft, the Chaiturgarh Fort also known as Lafargarh is located about 19 km from the Korba district in the state of Chhattisgarh. Protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, the fort is one of the monuments of Chhattisgarh.

History of Chaiturgarh Fort
The Chaiturgarh Fort was constructed in the 10th century CE by Raja Prithvideva I but was later captured by the Mughal Emperor, Akbar in 1571. The fort was under the rule of the Mughal Empire till 1628 CE.

Architecture of Chaiturgarh Fort
The Chaiturgarh Fort is naturally fortified and is considered to be one of the strongest natural forts in the state. With three main entrances named Menaka,Humkara, and Simhadwar, the hilltop on which the fort is located has a plain of about 5 sq. km with five ponds, out of which three have water all year round.

Inside the fort, there is a Mahishasura Mardini temple that houses an idol of Mahishasura Mardini with 12 hands in the sanctum sanctorum. About 3 km away from the temple, there is also a tunnel like cave called the Shankar cave, which is about 25 ft long.

Visiting Information on Chaiturgarh Fort
The Chaiturgarh Fort is located on the Korba- Bilaspur road and hence connectivity by roadways is easy. The railway stations of both Korba and Bilaspur are nearby at a distance of about 73 km and 75 km respectively. The closest airports are the Korba and Bilaspur Airports at about 82 km and 87km respectively.
