The Chaitanya movement is the emotional form of Hinduism that developed in the 16th century, inspired by the mode of worship originated by medieval-saint Chaitanya whose fervent devotional to Lord Krishna inspired the movement. His purpose in this world, his teachings, the growth of his movement and its nature and status in the contemporary world is absolutely remarkable. Chaitanya was born in a Brahmin family in Bengal. He became a Sanskrit teacher. While on a pilgrimage to perform his father`s death-anniversary ceremony, he had a profound religious experience, and he returned home indifferent to worldly matters.
Chaitanya`s movement of Krishna consciousness is full of dancing and singing about the pastimes of Lord Krishna. It was a very enlightening movement. Centred in Bengal, the movement was organized by Chaitanya`s followers Nityananda and Advaita. A group of six of disciples of Chaitanya, called gosvamins, developed its theology and devotional literature. The present leaders of the sect are the lineal descendants of the Chaitanya`a early disciples and companions. Among this group was the late A.C Bhaktivedanta, known as Swami Prabhupada, who founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) commonly called the Hare Krishnas, ehich has attempted to establish the beliefs and practices of the Chaitanya movement around the world.
