Bhimeshwari National Park is located in the in Mandya district in Karnataka. The sparkling blue waters of Cauvery wind fall off the Deccan Plateau and form the twin falls of Barachukki and Gaganachukki. About 35 kms downstream is yet another set of falls called Mekedatu. The Bhimeshwari lies between these two breathtaking cascades. It serves as a perfect picnic spot. One can also enjoy the adventure of angling for Mahseer fish. These fishes weigh almost 100 lbs. the place is thus a perfect blend of adventure, adrenalin, natural beauty.
Flora and Fauna of Bhimeshwari National Park
Bhimeshwari National Park houses a variety of birds and animals. One can see elephants, deer, wild boars, monkeys, jackals, crocodiles, otters and even leopards. There are a variety of birds also like heron, ibis, cormorant, and kingfisher. The sanctuary also provides opportunity for fishing the Mahseers. The Fishing Camp here has comfortable tents equipped with basic facilities like cots, mosquito nets, shower, toilet and even a kitchen. Food is served in the `Gol-Ghar`, an open air dining room.
Tourists can reach Bhimeshwari National Park through rail or road. The closest railhead is Bengaluru. Taxis are easily available to take the tourists to Bheemeshwari from the station. By bus it is only a 2 hr drive from the tech city of Bengaluru. Best time to visit the sanctuary is just after the monsoon, between August and February, when the river is swollen and the forest and its surroundings are rich with lush vegetation. December is also a good time to visit. The weather is pleasant in these months and makes sightseeing a comfortable process.
