Barabar Hills are located in north Gaya, Bihar. Inside these caves one will come across the Barabar Caves. These hills were constructed during the reign of Emperor Ashoka. The Barabar Hills are well known for the rock cut temples dating back to 200 B.C. These were built by Ashoka for the Ajivika sages. The Barabar Hills are carved out of a huge granite rock the design of these caves are remarkable.
The most important cave in these hills is the Lomas Rishi Cave. The façade of this cave resemble wooden constructions of earlier time. The interiors of the cave consist of rectangular chambers. The glass like polish adds beauty to the cave. The caves in Nagarjuni Hills comprise of two caves, namely, Sudama and Chaupar. While the exterior of these caves are simply done, the interiors are well polished. Originally built for religious purposes the Barabar Hills in Gaya are today important archaeological sites.
The nearest airport to this place is the Gaya Airport. From here the religious site can be easily accessible. If the travelers prefer railways then the nearest railway station is the Gaya Station in Bihar. Bus and taxi services from Gaya are also available to reach Barabar Hills, which are at a distance of 20-25 kilometers.
