Bakhira Bird Sanctuary is one of the prominent tourist attraction sites of Uttar Pradesh.

Bakhira Bird Sanctuary, Uttar PradeshBakhira Bird Sanctuary is a largest natural flood plain wetland in the Sant Kabir Nagar district of Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Bakhira Bird Sanctuary was established in 1980. It is a vast stretch of water body expanding an area over 29 square kilometres.

It is situated 44 km west of Gorakhpur city. This is an important lake of eastern Uttar Pradesh, which provides a wintering and staging ground for a number of migratory waterfowls and a breeding ground for resident birds. The sanctuary is named after the village Bakhira located adjacent to the lake along with as many as hundred and eight villages surrounding the lake within the 5 km radius.

Bakhira Bird Sanctuary has a natural lake called Bakhira Lake. Various migratory birds attract this lake. People throng from various parts of India in Bakhira Bird Sanctuary during the time of November to January the migratory birds from Tibet, China, Europe and Siberia come here covering 5000 kilometres.

Indian Purple moorhen also called Purple Swamp-hen is one of the beautiful common water birds found in this sanctuary. This bird is a common breeding resident of this sanctuary and is locally coined with the name "Kaima". There are more than 30 species of fish found in the lake. However, the dominant species are Labeo rohita and Chana sp.

Bakhira Bird Sanctuary can be accessed through the railways and roadways. This sanctuary is accessed via Gorakhpur-Khalilabad, through NH-28, then 17 km on Khalilabad-Bansi road. From the railways it can accessed from Gorakhpur to Sahjanwa (20 km) on NH-28, then 23 km from Sahjanwa to Jaswal and 3 km from Jaswal village. The nearest railhead is Khalilabad, which is on Gorakhpur-Lucknow NER Railway Line.
