Different Names of Baghanulla
Baghanulla is an Indian medicinal plant that is keyed out in Botany by the name "Cyanotis axillaris Roem. & Schult. F". This plant is commonly known as "Baghanulla" or "Soltraj" in Hindi, "Itsaka" in Marathi, "Nirpulli" in Tamil and "Golagandi" in Telugu.

Characteristic Features of Baghanulla
Baghanulla is a creeping or sub erect, diffusely branching annual herb with fibrous roots. The branches are glabrous or sparsely hairy, often coloured, internodes are 2.5cm to 7.5 cm long. Leaves are sessile, 5cm to15cm long and 0.4cm to 0.8cm wide, narrowly linear or linear lanceolate. The apex is acute or acuminate, glabrous or more or less hairy. The sheaths are 6mm to10 mm long, inflated and ciliate. Flowers are violet blue in colour, clustered in the inflated sheaths. The sepals are 10 mm long, spathulate lanceolate, acuminate and sparsely hairy. The corolla tube is 8 mm long, corolla lobes are broadly ovate. Fruits are about 0.6 cm long, oblong ellipsoid and beaked. The seeds are 2.5 mm long, oblong, mottled, dark brown and shining.

Medicinal Values of Baghanulla
Baghanulla is usually mixed with oil, as an external application to treat ascites. This plant is reportedly used as a remedy for tympanites in the Malabar Coast region especially in Kerala and Karnataka.
