Ayusya

Ayusya is a rite which takes place after the ceremony of Medhajanana. It is a rite which is performed for ensuring child’s long life.

Ayusya is a Hindu ritual performed for by the parents for the longevity of the child. The father murmurs near the navel or ear of the child "Agni is long-lived, through the trees. By that long life,-I make thee long-lived. Soma is long-lived, through the herbs. The Brahman is long-lived through observances. Sacrifice is long-lived through the sacrificial fire. The ocean is long-lived through the rivers". All instances of long life are cited before the child and it is believed that with these utterances the child would live long.

Father recited the verse thrice “threefold age," thinking that it would three times lengthen the child"s life span. The father invites five Brahmans, places them in five regions and requests them to breathe upon the child. The Brahman who sits in the south says” Back breathing", the one in the west says "Down breathing", the one in the north says "Out breathing" and fifth one look upwards saying "On breathing". If the father is not satisfied with these five of them then he himself recites the above phrases going round the child. This magical ceremony is performed to strengthen the breath of the child thereby prolonging child"s life.
