Apatsahayesvarar Temple

Apatsahayesvarar Temple also referred to as Alangudi or Guru Sthalam or Tiru Irum Poolai is an ancient Hindu temple situated in the village of Alangudi in the Valangaiman taluk of Tiruvarur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The presiding deity of the temple is Lord Shiva installed the form of a Shivalingam within a circular yonipitha in the sanctum sanctorum or garbhagriha of the temple.

Apatsahayesvarar Temple, an ancient Hindu temple narrating the fables of Lord Shiva, is adorned with a 5 tier rajagopuram and enclosed by two prakarams i.e. the closed confines of the religious edifice.

Apatsahayesvarar Temple is regarded as one of the Navagraha i.e. nine planets temples positioned in the Cauvery Delta region committed to planet Jupiter and known as Dakshinamoorthy, the Guru.. The temple is also one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams. Here Campantar, known to be one of the four most revered Nayanars i.e. Shaivite Saints have performed and sung songs in honour of the pilgrimage centre and its enshrined deity.

Apatsahayesvarar Temple is associated with an interesting legend according to which Lord Shiva had consumed deadly poison from which evolved the name Alangudi and the deity being termed as Apatsahayesvara that notifies as the saviour during hard times.
