Antur Fort

Antur Fort in Maharashtra was built by a Maratha Chief in the 15th Century. It is located in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra.

Antur Fort, MaharashtraAntur Fort is a fort near Chimnapur village in the Aurangabad district of Maharashtra. The fort is located in the remote parts of Ajanta Hills and is part of Gautala Wild Sanctuary. There are many beautiful monuments on the fort which are very well preserved and protected by Archaeological Department of Maharashtra State.

History of Antur Fort
Antur Fort was built about the middle of the 15th century by a Maratha Chief and was named after him. The fort remained in the possession of his descendants for about a century and was then taken by the Muslims. Between 16th and 17th centuries, it belonged to the Nizam Shahi of Ahmednagar which is evident from the several inscriptions in the fort. Some of the kings of this dynasty are also mentioned in the inscription.

Structure of Antur Fort
The hill on which Antur Fort stays is nearly square in shape and about a mile in circumference. It has a natural scarp about 700 ft high on three sides while on the south it has been artificially scarped. Two fines of walls, with bastions at intervals, extend round the brow of the hill at a short distance from each other and the entrance was guarded by strong teak wood gates.

Aurangabad city is just about an hour away from Antur Fort. Aurangabad Airport is the nearest airport and Aurangabad Railway Station is the nearest railway station to reach Antur Fort. One can hire a taxi from the airport or railway station to reach the fort.
