Amvarisha

Amvarisha was a king of the Solar Dynasty. A Vaishnavite by religion, Amvarisha was a very courageous and powerful emperor. Throughout his life he fought several battles combating with millions of soldiers. Amvarisha earns the credit of defeating and conquering many kings and their kingdom and lands.

After every conquest he would perform a sacrifice which would include food, drink, music, sports, and amusements. It was done for the purpose of entertainment of all classes of people. During the sacrifice Amvarisha even gifted a million cows to the Brahman. So liberal and general was Amvarisha that even the great seers declared him as one of the greatest kings ever. Amvarisha had a beautiful daughter, Srimati. For marrying her two eminent sages fought with him but could not be successful. After Amvarisha, the power of Kosala declined under the next thirteen kings. His immediate successor was Sindhudwipa. He passed away most of his life at the sacred capital of Prithudaka on the north bank of the Sarasvati. It is said he had attained great Brahmanhood here.
